Vibrotactile Feedback for Haptics and Telemanipulation: Survey, Concept and Experiment
نویسنده
چکیده
In telemanipulation and 3D virtual interactions it is important to transmit force sensation from the remote or virtual environment to the operator. Due to the weak points (control issues, robustness, cost) of real force feedback devices, methods where force is rendered on non-native sensory channels have grounds. In this paper, a survey of the related literature is presented and the concept of sensor-bridging type cognitive infocommunications based force reflecting schemes is discussed. A complete experimental infrastructure with hardware and software components is built providing a background for the investigation of the proposed methods from practical usability aspects. This environment is utilized in a pilot experiment with human participants providing substantial observations on the usability of sensor-bridging type vibrotactile force feedback methods. The test confirms that vibrotactile glove equipped with shaftless vibration motors can be successfully applied as tactile/haptic feedback device in immersive virtual reality applications.

Guest Editorial for Special Section on Consumer Electronics
THE number of daily human computer interactions with consumer devices is increasing at a staggering rate. Just considering text messaging in the United States alone, more than a trillion text messages have been sent in the last year (CTIA Semi-Annual survey October 2011). The fundamental means of interacting with our digital environment are through video, audio, and haptics, and the sense of to...
متن کاملEmpirical Studies for Effective Near-Field Haptics in Virtual Environments
This paper presents results from two experiments into the use of vibrotactile cues for near-field haptics in virtual environments. In one experiment, subjects were tested on their ability to identify the location of a onesecond vibrotactile stimulus presented to a single tactor of a 3-by-3 array on their back. We recorded an 84% correct identification rate. In a second experiment, subjects were...
متن کاملPsychophysical Characterization and Testbed Validation of a Wearable Vibrotactile Glove for Telemanipulation
This paper describes and evaluates a high-fidelity, low-cost haptic interface for teleoperation. The interface is a wearable vibrotactile glove containing miniature voice coils that provides continuous, proportional force information to the user's fingertips. In psychophysical experiments, correlated variations in the frequency and amplitude of the stimulators extended the user's perceptual res...
متن کاملContact Location Display for Haptic Perception of Curvature and Object Motion
We present a new tactile display for use in dexterous telemanipulation and virtual reality. Our system renders the location of the contact centroid moving on the user’s fingertip. Constructed in a thimble-sized package and mounted on a haptic force-feedback device, it provides the user with concurrent feedback of contact location and interaction forces. We believe such a design will enable more ...
متن کاملModel-mediated Telemanipulation Model-mediated Telemanipulation
This paper presents a user-centered, model-mediated approach to bilateral telemanipulation under large communication delays. Assuming that the environment is only slowly or infrequently changing, it mitigates user perception difficulties and allows stable motion and force interactions with the remote environment. Rather than directly sending slave sensory data to the user, the method abstracts ...
